PATRICK LOUDON MCIAIN STEWART MBE LLB WS FSA Scot Profile

Patrick Stewart was born in Campbeltown on 25 July 1945, eldest son of Archibald Ian Balfour Stewart CBE BL and Ailsa Mary Rosamund Stewart.

He was educated in Campbeltown and Edinburgh where, in the latter place, he qualified as a solicitor in 1968. In the same year he was admitted to the Society of Writers to the Signet (a Society of Edinburgh solicitors).

He joined the family firm of solicitors, Stewart Balfour and Sutherland, based in Campbeltown, in 1970 and remained with them in various capacities, including Senior Partner until 2009. He particularly enjoyed the Law relating to agriculture, forestry, companies and the marine environment.

While practising full-time as a solicitor he was also, during this time, Secretary to the Clyde Fishermen’s Association and served terms as a Director of the Scottish Fishermen’s Organisation Ltd and a member of the Executive Committee of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation. He represented the fishing industry at local, national and international levels. He was appointed MBE in 2000 for services to the fishing industry.

In the voluntary sector he joined Kintyre Round Table and remained a member for over 16 years. He was invited to join the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Trust for Argyll & Bute shortly after the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 and remain with it and was its Chairman for 10 years after it became the Argyll & Bute Trust. The trust funded young people wishing to pursue their development in academic and practical matters. It also continued the work of giving grants to youth and community groups involved in cleaning litter.

Patrick has been involved in many other voluntary organisations including the Campbeltown & Kintyre Development Trust.

Subsequent to joining the Royal Naval Reserve in 1968 he commanded the Campbeltown Unit Sea Cadet Corps for many years taking it to the top rank of Units in the United Kingdom. From that he served on the governing body of the Sea Cadets, based in London for 15 years. He is now a Life Vice President of the Marine Society & Sea Cadets.

Patrick was first invited to join the Argyll & Bute Lieutenancy in 1987 and served as a Depute Lieutenant until 2002 when he was invited to become the Vice Lieutenant. He was appointed, by Her Majesty The Queen as Lord-Lieutenant for Argyll & Bute in 2011.

Since then he has been kept very busy with Lieutenancy duties and in particular as a result of his role as Chairman of the Argyll & Bute World War I Steering Group which is fully engaged with commemorating, in each of the centenary years of the War, events, which took place, or forces, which participated in, the conflict
